The Farm
Although
the dairy goats are our primary effort, we also have many other animals
and activities on the farm
Goats
- Spring is a bit frantic on the farm!
Each doe kidding needs special attention and monitoring. Kidding can
take up to 6 hours of monitoring per doe. Multiply that by 60 as well
as feeding everyone and milking and we are quite overworked!
- We have 6 pasture areas which we cross
fence with electric temporary fencing to control grazing.
Chickens
- The chickens go broody in May and June.
Soon there are clutches of chicks everywhere.
Dogs
- Sampson and Sara (rat terriers) are our
pest control team. Rats are their area of expertise - as well as voles
and mice.
- Scout and Maggie (anatolian shepards)
guard the bucks in the North pasture. Maggie is a great mom. She
actually delivers her pups herself. Once they are out two inches, she
grabs them, pulls them out, plops them between her fromt feet for their
first bath. She then picks them up and plops them on her teats.
Amazing!
- Gabriel (6 mos), Gracie (2 yrs), and
Zahmet (Sammy to us - 5yrs) guard the 3 east pastures
- Rhoda has decided she is definitely a
house dog. She guards the house and yard (I think from butterflies...)
Horses
- Jessie and Mariah are our useless "yard
ornaments" and biggest eaters. They are in training - so perhaps we'll
actually ride them in the future
